CSEC English A SBA overview

Overview

This School-Based Assessment (SBA) requires students to join groups consisting of at least three members per group. After finding the themes, the students MUST find sub-topics relating to the broad theme. Students are expected to source information from THREE artefacts, namely, video, audio and print (compulsory).

NB: These artefacts must be based on the sub-topics. 

Example: 

Theme: Pollution 
  • Sub-topic 1: The effects of Pollution on the environment
  • Sub-topic 2: The causes of air pollution
  • Sub-topic 3: How to alleviate pollution 

After that, each student should write a Plan of Investigation. This aspect is based on the sub-topic chosen, and the following questions MUST be answered: 
  1. Why did you choose the topic?
  2. How will this research help you as a student of English Language?
  3. How do you intend to collect information on the topic? 

Example: 

I have chosen the topic " The effects of Pollution on the environment" because over the years I have learned of some of the ways that pollution can affect the environment negatively. This has sparked my interest in wanting to pursue a career in the field of environmental studies. As a student of English, this research will help to enhance my summary writing skills as I will be required to select and organized the main ideas from my artefacts. Additionally, this research will also aid in improving my critical thinking and research skills. I intend to use a video, newspaper article, and audio to collect the relevant information for this research.

The Reflection

This aspect of the SBA requires candidates to focus on three key areas: How did the artefacts help to shape your thinking : This is where the student will highlight what he/she has learned from reviewing and selecting relevant data from the three artefacts.  The language Use : Based on the information outlined in the artefacts, the candidate is expected to comment on the effectiveness of the language use of each artefact. For example, did the writer use statistic? Did the writer use formal language, informal language or both? Is the tone persuasive, argumentative or narrative?  How did doing the SBA helps you to become a better person : This is where the candidate is expected to focus on key areas such as working in a group, selecting relevant information and the skills that were enhanced.  Example: Reflection 1:  My first artefact is a newspaper article entitled "Save the Penguins" by John Brown.
